The Annwyn’s Secret: an “itinerarium mentis”    review by  prof.  Guido Monte

Claudine Giovannoni is a recognized Swiss novels author, a “traveler of the mind” therefore, who has always thought about halfway between East and West, between myth and reality. And her novels, conveyed by the fantasy, they moved in worlds of the imagination into reality, however, always deeply bound by a sense of the drama of our conflicting real world.

The last work, the novel “The Annwyn’s Secret” (Publisher Edizioni ULIVO, 2013), is the story of Chrysalis, a mysterious creature of the mysterious Annwyn’s people, dreamers beings who live with men to help them into the distant twenty-third century and Chrisa is supported from her beloved brother Joshua. Always halfway between reality and dream, the girl is searching of the Sacred Mirror. She has special psychic powers: “These ‘dreamers’, commonly called Annwyn, are provided with the same human molecular structure in efforts to protect them and disguising their presence among us, but the power of their mind is immeasurable” (pag.7). Their thoughts are “like the leaves of a tree in autumn” (pag.290).

In the vision of the imaginative Giovannoni everything is connected with everything secretly, invisibly but deep, according to a thin red thread: Buddhist teachings, Theosophy, Nordic myths collide into an eternal struggle between good and evil, a struggle to save the Good which Chrysalis and his friends know to privilege and share. The extra-corporeal trip which theheroin performs with his brother, closely resembles to the Buddhist Bardo, the Matrix Vibrational is the Alchemical Quintessence… and their is an initiation “itinerarium” from adolescence to adulthood, to the be-aware as adults holders truth, knowing that all is One, but also what Borges would say, “everything is infinity of things.”

The same author defines in the novel the move “… of what is considered right or wrong, the conflict between the divine and the diabolical, as well as of human selfishness…”, but in the end what prevails is in my opinion the Feminine Intuitive-Being of the young protagonist, as a diviner woman because unconsciously in contact with the origins of its creation, the journey Chrysalis achieved in her history is, at the end, an “itinerarium mentis”, a journey of the mind in its various stages of evolution, of progress in returning to the Mother Archetype, inevitably inward: the Augustinian Essence of  “in interiore homine habitat veritas”.

This is “the caress of the world / and the sleep of the mists” (pag.303) of the Annwyn, whose secrets Claudine Giovannoni has partially revealed in this almost initiatory work, drawing on the essence of our collective mythic memory.

Il Segreto degli Annwyn: un “itinerarium mentis” recensione di Guido Monte

Claudine Giovannoni è una riconosciuta autrice svizzera di romanzi, una “viaggiatrice della mente” dunque, che ha sempre pensato a metà tra oriente e occidente, tra mito e realtà. E i suoi romanzi, veicolati dalla fantasia, si sono mossi all’interno di mondi dell’immaginazione in realtà però sempre profondamente vincolati dal senso del dramma del nostro conflittuato mondo reale.

L’ultimo lavoro, il romanzo “Il Segreto degli Annwyn” (Ed. Ulivo, 2013), è la storia di Chrysalis, una creatura misteriosa del misterioso popolo degli Annwyn, esseri sognatori che convivono con gli uomini per aiutarli, nel lontano tempo del ventitreesimo secolo; Chrysa è affiancata dall’amatissimo fratello Joshua. Sempre a metà tra realtà e sogno, la bambina è alla ricerca dello Specchio Sacro. Ha poteri psichici speciali: “Questi ‘sognatori’, comunemente chiamati Annwyn, sono provvisti della stessa struttura molecolare umana nella finalità di proteggersi camuffando la loro presenza fra di noi, ma il potere della loro mente è incommensurabile” (p.7) I loro pensieri sono “come le foglie di un albero in autunno” (p.290).

Nella visione immaginifica della Giovannoni tutto è nascostamente collegato con tutto, in modo invisibile però profondo, secondo un sottile filo rosso: dottrina buddista, teosofia, miti nordici si incrociano in una eterna lotta tra il bene e il male, una lotta per salvare il bene che Chrysalis e i suoi amici sanno privilegiare e condividere. Il viaggio extra-corporeo che l’eroina effettua con il fratello somiglia molto al bardo buddista, la Matrice Vibrazionale alla Quintessenza alchemica… e il loro resta un itinerarium iniziatico dall’adolescenza verso la maturità, verso l’essere adulti-consapevoli come detentori della verità: sapere che tutto è Uno, ma anche che, direbbe Borges, “ogni cosa è infinità di cose”.

La stessa autrice definisce all’interno del romanzo il muoversi “… di ciò che si ritiene giusto o sbagliato, del conflitto tra il divino e il diabolico, come pure dell’egoismo umano…”, ma alla fine ciò che a mio avviso prevale è l’essere femminile-intuitivo della giovanissima protagonista, in quanto donna divinatrice perché in inconscio contatto con le origini della sua Creazione; il viaggio che Chrysalis realizza nella sua storia è alla fine un itinerarium mentis, un viaggio della mente nei suoi vari stadi di evoluzione, di progresso nel ritornare verso la Madre archetipa, inevitabilmente verso l’interno: l’essenza agostiniana dell’“in interiore homine habitat veritas”.

Questa è “la carezza del mondo / e il sonno delle nebbie” (p.303) degli Annwyn, i cui segreti Claudine Giovannoni ci ha in parte rivelato in quest’opera quasi iniziatica, attingendo anch’ella alle essenze della nostra memoria mitica collettiva.
