Next August the adventure will be all Icelandic! I had already been tickled by the idea of visiting the locations where the “Game of Thrones” series was partly filmed for several years, but there is so many more wonderful places to discover!
From Thingvellir National Park, Hengill, Lake Mývatn, Reynisfjara Black Beach, Stakkholtsgja, Þórufoss Waterfall, Kirkjufell Mountain, Hverfjall Crater, Hverir, and then there is also the Valley of Þjórsárdalur.
With my husband we go there next summer 2023 so we can take more advantage of the northern part which is located at 66° 33′ N even further north than the Scottish Highlands we visited several years ago. Considering the distance, impossibility of ferrying our PT Cruiser (with which we have already done other follies), we opted to rent a 4WD at the airport that should allow us to venture even on rural and snowy roads.
Although summer, temperatures in Iceland will be between 10-15° maximum. Only downside: I don’t think it will be possible to see the Aurora borealis!
This will also be our chosen route based on the possibility of staying in some hotel accommodation, considering that as early as March, in the southern part of the island between Kálfafell and Djúpivogur, all hotels andd B&B were already occupied.
Il prossimo agosto l’avventura sarà tutta islandese! Mi aveva già solleticato da diversi anni l’idea di visitare i luoghi in cui la serie “Game of Thrones” è stata in parte girata.
Dal Parco Nazionale di Thingvellir, Hengill, il Lago Mývatn, la spiaggia nera di Reynisfjara, Stakkholtsgja, la cascata di Þórufoss, il monte Kirkjufell, il cratere di Hverfjall, Hverir, e poi c’è anche la Valle di Þjórsárdalur. Ma non solo: l’Islanda è un’isola che riserva sorprese stupende al visitatore.
Con mio marito ci andiamo in estate per poter meglio sfruttare la parte settentrionale che si trova a 66° 33′ N, quindi ancora più a nord delle Highlands scozzesi che avevamo visitato diversi anni fa. Considerando la distanza, l’impossibilità di traghettare la nostra PT Cruiser (con la quale abbiamo già fatto altre follie), abbiamo optato per noleggiare all’aeroporto una 4X4 che dovrebbe permetterci di avventurarci anche su strade rurali e innevate.
Anche se in estate, le temperature in Islanda saranno tra i 10-15° al massimo. Unico neo: non credo che sarà possibile vedere l’Aurora boreale!
Questo sarà il nostro percorso scelto anche in base alla possibilità di alloggiare in qualche struttura alberghiera, considerando che già da marzo, nella parte sud dell’isola tra Kálfafell e Djúpivogur, tutte erano già occupate.
