  • What to say about Claudine? She is passionate about living a present, balanced and authentic life, with a healthy dose of humor! She loves to travel the world, explore new places, people and food, but equally loves to retreat into silent solitude. She is a writer who follows a hidden path, into an unfamiliar world. If you just surrender and go with her on her eerie journey, you will find that you have surrendered to enchantment, as if in a voluptuous and fantastic dream. She makes you believe everything she sees in her fantasy and dreams. But as well you take a journey to the frozen mountain peaks of the north of Europe, to the crowded sweating streets of Mexico or Africa. Her characters are wonderfully real and wholly believable perfectly situated in her richly textured prose. She’s a lovely person and she writes with exquisite powers of description! She’s simply great! R. McKelley

E’ semplicemente magnifica.

The IUCN calls for halt to species decline by 2030

With urgent need, I share the post of “in the shadow of the wolf”.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature reminds us that the emergency must be taken with extreme urgency.
The current crisis, without previous analogues, must absolutely lead us to launch immediate conservation laws so that the bio-diversity is also guaranteed in the future. The governments of the world have been called upon to intervene with the utmost urgency to avoid extinctions of endangered animals caused by man.

Con necessità impellente, condivido il post di “in the shadow of the wolf”.

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 11 October 2019 (IUCN)

IUCN has issued an urgent call to massively scale up species conservation action in response to the escalating biodiversity crisis. The Abu Dhabi Call for Global Species Conservation Action appeals to the world’s governments, international agencies and the private sector to halt species decline and prevent human-driven extinctions by 2030, and to improve the conservation status of threatened species with a view to bringing about widespread recovery by 2050.

The Abu Dhabi Call, issued at this week’s IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) Leaders’ Meeting, urges governments to take emergency measures to save those species at the highest risk of extinction and tackle key threats that are driving population declines and extinctions. These include the lack of incentives for landowners and managers to retain wild species and natural habitats; poor or abusive practices in agriculture, fisheries, and forestry; wildlife crime; emerging infectious diseases; the disruption of water flow; inadequate management of waste and discharges; invasive alien species; and increasingly, climate change and ocean acidification.

“With 2020 comes the opportunity to curb the escalating extinction crisis and invest in a more optimistic future. With this Call, IUCN stands ready to support governments and civil society, including young people, to work for a world in which species are preserved and valued for their intrinsic worth as well as the benefits they offer,” said IUCN Acting Director General Dr Grethel Aguilar. “The IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020 will bring together states, civil society and indigenous peoples to work together towards halting species declines by 2030.”

The Call is the result of more than 300 SSC Leaders coming together in Abu Dhabi on the cusp of 2020, a year that will see critical decisions for the future of the planet taken by policy makers. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Paris Agreement on Climate Change will be reviewed, and the Convention on Biological Diversity will adopt the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. A new UN legal binding agreement on marine biodiversity in the High Seas is under negotiation. The IUCN World Conservation Congress will amplify this Call, which will then be addressed by the United Nations Heads of State Summit on Biodiversity.

“The Species Survival Commission is the world’s largest network of species scientists and a fundamental contributor to IUCN’s role as provider of the knowledge that underlies nature conservation. They devote their lives, generally on an entirely voluntary basis, to saving species. The high quality of the work of SSC Specialist Groups provides a strong scientific foundation for conservation action. We now appeal to governments to urgently respond to this Call by helping pull species back from the brink of extinction,” said Dr Jon Paul Rodríguez, Chair of IUCN’s Species Survival Commission.

A global Programme of Work on Species Conservation will be launched at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in June next year. IUCN calls on Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity and the other biodiversity-related conventions to respond by including this Programme in the post 2020 global biodiversity framework and follow up with urgent implementation. At the Congress, governments, civil society and indigenous peoples’ organisations will come together to drive conservation efforts for ‘a just world that values and conserves nature.

“Decisions made in 2020 will define the future of the planet,” said Dr Jane Smart, Global Director of the IUCN’s Biodiversity Conservation Group. “We face a nature emergency. Species are the primary source of income and resources for hundreds of millions of people around the globe; their aesthetic values and spiritual roles provide comfort and inspiration as well as recreation. At this critical moment, the world’s governments must accept responsibility for this emergency and act now to ensure we pass on a rich natural heritage to future generations. This is a unique opportunity to mobilise society and galvanise the necessary action to address the species crisis.”

IUCN also recalls that the global target to bring about the recovery of known threatened species adopted in Nagoya, Japan in 2010 is unlikely to be met, despite substantial efforts from conservationists worldwide. Looking forward, IUCN emphasises the importance of including clear, ambitious targets on species conservation in the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

In recognition of the scale of transformative change that is needed, the Abu Dhabi Call for Species Conservation Action encourages governments and donor institutions to allocate substantial additional resources for conservation of species and their habitats.

The IUCN Species Survival Commission is the world’s largest network of species conservation experts with over 9,000 members globally. It is mandated by the Members of IUCN (governments, NGOs, and indigenous peoples’ organisations) to conserve species. This unique body includes biologists, ecologists, wildlife managers, health and social scientists, educators, community representatives, economists and government officials. The Call was developed by SSC Leaders meeting in Abu Dhabi with generous support from the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi.

The Species Survival Commission generates the knowledge for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of and animal, fungi and plant species. SSC experts have unique insight into the extent to which species are undergoing unprecedented and growing threats from unsustainable human activities, reflected in The IUCN Red List.

Saturday September 28th. 2019: I was there, in the Federal Square Bern

Klimastrike.ch.bern.28.9.2019

100,000 participants: they were so numerous that only a part was able to enter the large square, in front of the imposing Federal Palace where decisions of vital importance are made, for Switzerland, but not only.
In 19 days Switzerland will vote: with this strike, the people have shown that a change is necessary and urgent.

The “Climate Strike” event (which was attended by over 80 organizations and groups) showed that climate problems are a PRIORITY for the entire society.
The Federal Parliament will be re-elected and the time has come for Switzerland to make its policy more respectful of the climate by countering those that hinder this process!
We have been (and are) a river in flood, an unstoppable movement for the climate, that includes people of every age and social group, of every religion and domicile.
Bern will have to implement the Paris climate agreement and take the necessary steps to do even better than the 1.5 ° target.
Many have reached the capital by railways with trains specially organized for this event, the bravest have arrived on bicycles, others on foot…
We want facts, not vain words and false promises: we want an eco-social transformation of the economy and society, and science supports us.
Each newspaper discusses it: both environmental parties Green and Liberal Green will see an overwhelming progression in the federal elections, this is a certain fact.

…oOo…

Let’s start reducing the consumption of meat * iniziamo a ridurre il consumo di carne

Claudine published article on  Corriere del Ticino 6.9.2019

It is always very tender to see cows with beautiful horns, grazing among our beautiful pine-covered mountains, then further on, you can also see some streaks of snow that have survived the rise in temperature.
It is also tender to read that over here (in Ticino) the cattles have a name, that they are lovingly cared for if they are sick and that they are fed with first quality fodder and without the addition of antibiotics, growth hormones and other products with doubtful influences on the man who then the meat eats it.

Mr. S. Genini of UCT (Union of Farmers of Ticino and Agricultural Secretariat) explains very well the situation in our country, including the free trade agreement that the European Association (Aels) is entering into with Mercosur.
We all know, at least even this is a fact, that the increase in CO2 is also due to intensive farming (and there are everywhere, not only in the Americas).
The harrowing images of the Amazon where the fire is devouring second after second the “lung of our planet”, do not need explanations. And yet, to satisfy the need to consume meat, people no longer look at quality but at quantity.

When they pass in front of the meat counter, they look first at the price tag, forgetting how much suffering and horror is hidden behind each piece displayed in a good view.
And here we have no differences: the piece of local organic meat or that of intensive slaughtering of meat, both were living creatures.
Perhaps we should all ask ourselves questions: is there really a “human” method for raising an animal that is then slaughtered?
Who lingers in front of the counters with exposed meat products, it does not matter if salami rather than steaks, did he/she ask himself who was the creature from which was the finished product extracted? Was it called “Bella” or “Bruna” or was it just a mass of product to be slaughtered without a name, enclosed in an iron cage where it could not even move?

Perhaps if we really want to do something intelligent for the planet, for our health, we could start reducing the consumption of meat and products derived from animals.
It is a question of choice, quality of life, not only for the animals but also for us: animals that are moving on two legs.

[My article was written in response to another appeared in the press, rather aimed to claim at the increasing costs of meat in Switzerland… since people buy cheaper foreign meat. For this reason, I use mockery tones…]

Amazonia: the planet’s lung is burning

The Amazon is being cleared to grow soybeans. That soy is almost exclusively harvested and exported to feed livestock on factory farms around the world, an easy and cheap way to feed animals and get them fat for slaughter quickly.

It is the world’s appetite for beef that is fuelling the fires in the Amazon.

This is the beginning of the apocalypse…   Questo  è l’inizio dell’apocalisse…

[Update August 22, 2019 from Avaaz Brazil]
Right now, THOUSANDS of fires are burning the Amazon, with entire cities in the dark under clouds of black smoke…
A terrifying sight – but Avaaz has just delivered over 1 million signatures to the Brazilian Congress, and the petition continues to be viral! With the fires out of control, the Brazilian government is under enormous pressure to act – let’s make sure they do it. Sign up now and share with everyone!

It’s terrifying: in the last year in the Amazon an area as large as 500 thousand football fields has been destroyed! Half a BILLION of trees lost forever.
It works like this: armed militias invade protected areas and kill indigenous leaders who try to oppose them. It even seems like they are spilling gasoline from planes to ignite huge portions of forest. And to make matters worse, the ultra-right President Bolsonaro is making matters worse by removing the existing safeguards from the Amazon!
Right now, however, the defense parliamentarians of the Amazon are examining new forms of protection to be proposed to Congress to save the precious rainforest. And indigenous peoples are seeking international support to defend their home.
Let us join together from all over the world to protect the forest – and these allies will bring our voices into Congress at every key moment, to stop the chainsaws and the apocalypse in the Amazon.

[Aggiornamento 22 Agosto 2019 from Avaaz Brazil]

In Switzerland only

Noi ci prepariamo!

Abbiamo bisogno di un cambiamento * We badly need a change

pvl_3_pilstri_web

…oOo…

In recent months, various surveys have appeared on the concerns of the Swiss population, and as well some forecasts for the national election’s teams for next autumn.

The climate appears to be among the major concerns, therefore it was given a discreet advance of the two environmentalist parties. The confirmation of the polls came last weekend in the renewal of the powers of the Canton of Zurich, which is taken as the most important reference for the national elections. The success proved to be more substantial than the polls with a cumulative percentage of votes of ca. 25% (projections) to the Grand Council, that is one citizen out of 4 voted  Green Liberal or Green, respectively the fourth and fifth strength of the Canton. Both formations have therefore resumed the electoral force they had in 2011, it is not an extemporaneous event but a path of continuous awareness.

Green Liberal  were founded about fifteen years ago and have shown that a certain renewal is needed in politics. In fact we are for a more contemporary approach that escapes dogmatism and electoral slogans to go directly to look for each topic a concrete solution that combines the different needs of the population and sustainability.

Beyond the most popular environmental issues such as in the real estate sector with the promotion of the use of renewable energies and subsidies for better thermal insulation, in mobility with the promotion of public transport and the electrification of the vehicle fleet, or the push to allow the realization of sustainable neighborhoods, we see the potential for improvement in every sector and with our young people and our representatives at every level we bring forward tangible proposals. Deposited in Bern we have several proposals to reduce climate-damaging emissions.

Some examples in nutrition such as the prohibition of killing male chicks, the reduction of food waste, the proposal for modification for agricultural policy subsidies.
We concretely push for true equality between people, for example with the marriage initiative for all.

We are also at the forefront of keeping the water public (ZH) or cutting compensation for retired state councilors (GE…).

We also see the importance of bilateral agreements with our main economic partner, Europe, so that innovation, research and Swiss companies have a clear or lasting picture, but taking care of job security and social partnership.

In the next cantonal elections in Ticino we therefore invite those who do not feel represented or are disappointed, the undecided, the confederates, the young, the women, the LGBT to vote for Lista N° 6. The country needs you, the country needs us.

We represent change for sustainable development!
