La Kitsune (romanzo) di Gian Paolo Marcolongo

I state that since always I have had a strong connection with Japan and when I read the title of this novel, obviously, I was immediately extremely intrigued.
I know several Japanese legends, learned during the various trips I made between Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. I must also admit that my daughter collects “manga” and “anime” and she has all the animēshon of Hayao Miyazaki, which are also my favorites.
The legend of the Kitsune no yomeiri (nine-tailed fox) is also known outside of Japan; great cleverness and intelligence are attributed to the Kitsune, as well as the ability to take human form to deceive people (in essence she is a shapeshifter).
Marcolongo’s novel recalls ideas from an ancient legend written by the monk Kyoukai between the 8th/9th century, but the author inserts other details with skill and strong suspense, a typical imprint of his particular writer’s style.
In the beautiful story, we find parallelism between an intense love story dating back to 1999 between Klaus and Amanda and that of 2009/2010 between Pietro and Elisa. While Pietro’s introspections sometimes distract us from the plot, making us understand even better the character of the protagonist.
Both stories are set in the same old hut isolated from the rest of the world, on the slopes of Mount Antelao in the Dolomites.
Following the common thread, I immersed myself in the immensity of the forest, stepping on the fragrant moss of wood and wet leaves: I was intrigued, very intrigued.
Behind every fir or larch, it seemed to me that I could see the Fox… but perhaps, the reddish flicker was only a shadow play at sunset when, like swords, the rays crossed the black foliage of the trees.
Marcolongo brings the reader back and forth in time by carrying out an in-depth analysis of the thoughts of Pietro, the main character. His lifestyle choices, disappointed expectations in the work field and uncertain expectations in the emotional field that despite his 35 years, had still kept him a virgin.
It all starts with a strange announcement that appeared in the Gazzettino di Belluno: “two thousand perches of wood on the slopes of Mount Antelao for sale …”

And Pietro’s life takes a definitive turn that will upset his every prognostic, every desirable idea of ​​what is really good for him.
Only towards the end of the story, do the pieces start to fit together and the plot again takes on a clarifying reversal. But nothing in this novel is given to chance since it was Pietro’s destiny to meet the Kitsune and to receive the magical gift that, again, would have changed his life.

Premetto che da sempre nutro una forte connessione con il Giappone, quando ho letto il titolo di questo romanzo, evidentemente, sono subito stata estremamente incuriosita.
Conosco diverse leggende giapponesi, apprese durante i diversi viaggi che ho fatto tra Tokyo, Osaka, e Kyoto. Devo poi anche ammettere che mia figlia colleziona “manga” e “anime” e ha tutti gli animēshon di Hayao Miyazaki, che sono anche i miei favoriti.
La leggenda della Kitsune no yomeiri (Volpe a nove code) è conosciuta anche fuori dal Giappone; alla Kitsune si attribuisce grande furbizia e intelligenza, nonché la facoltà di prendere sembianze umane per ingannare le persone (in sostanza ella è una mutaforma).
Il romanzo di Marcolongo richiama spunti da un’antica leggenda scritta dal monaco Kyoukai tra il VIII / IX secolo, ma l’autore vi inserisce altri particolari con abilità ed un forte suspense, impronta tipica del suo stile.
Nel bel racconto, ritroviamo un parallelismo tra un’intensa storia d’amore risalente al 1999 tra Klaus e Amanda e quella del 2009/2010 tra Pietro ed Elisa. Mentre le introspezioni di Pietro, a volte, ci distolgono dalla trama facendoci però comprendere ancora meglio il carattere del protagonista.
Entrambe le storie sono ambientate nella stessa vecchia baita isolata dal resto del mondo, sulle pendici del monte Antelao nelle Dolomiti.
Seguendo il filo conduttore, mi sono immersa nell’immensità della foresta calpestando il muschio profumato di legno e foglie bagnate: ero incuriosita, molto incuriosita.
Dietro ogni abete o larice mi sembrava di scorgere la Volpe… ma forse, il guizzo rossastro, era solo un gioco d’ombre al calar del sole quando come spade i raggi attraversavano le nere chiome degli alberi.
Marcolongo riporta il lettore avanti ed indietro nel tempo effettuando un’analisi approfondita dei pensieri di Pietro, il personaggio principale. Le sue scelte di vita, le aspettative deluse nel campo lavorativo e quelle incerte dell’ambito affettivo che malgrado i suoi 35 anni, lo avevano mantenuto ancora vergine.
Tutto inizia da uno strano annuncio apparso su Gazzettino di Belluno: “vendesi duemila pertiche di bosco sulle pendici del monte Antelao…” E la vita di Pietro prende una svolta definitiva che sconvolgerà ogni suo prognostico, ogni sua auspicabile idea di ciò che è veramente buono per lui.
Solo verso il finale della storia, i tasselli iniziano ad incastrarsi e la trama assume nuovamente una ribaltamento chiarificatore. Ma nulla in questo romanzo è dato al caso poiché era destino di Pietro incontrare la Kitsune e di ricevere il magico regalo che, nuovamente, gli avrebbe modificato la vita
