Arturo Monterroso brings us back to Guatemala, still full of political strokes, bloody attacks where drug traffickers, soldiers and those who make little money, say how to run terror.
This time, the protagonist is something that resembles a small insect that looks a lot like Maruca and Enriqueta’s Dragonfly in Tecpán: its code name is Rx566SL-REAPER.

There are a thousand possibilities where even the most trivial situation might be the cause of a shootout; but following the intimidation that happened that night, Antonio, father of Inés and Isabel, decides to bring his wife Nina and his daughters for some time to Gertrudis, a relative of theirs.
A week after having moved to Aunt Gertrudis’ house, Antonio and his family were invited to lunch at San Lucas in the house of the engineer lquijay, and this is where the Rx566SL-REAPER appears during a walk in the garden of the villa.
Young engineer Manuel, Inés and Isabel’s friend, will be a valuable ally in finding out how it is made and what it is, by means of an electronic scanning microscope.

The pungent irony of the author takes shape in the conversations of the characters where the raw Guatemaltecan reality of each day (and of many other countries) is defused. On the one hand, pretenses for shooting during the festivities of a thousand different Saints, on the other hand, he is able to ridicule those who must support foreign technology by possessing a cell phone.
Moreover, the improvised investigator Don Ramiro, well personify sarcasm when he speaks to his young helper Amadeo. A hit man commissioned Don Ramiro to find Adelaida Prado, while Inés and Isabel are as well on Adelaida’s traces.
The young anthropologist Adelaida, kept hidden by Maruca and Enriqueta in Tecpán in the novel of the La Mosca Dragon, returned after years of political asylum in Mexico, in fact, she was not a subversive, but was only guilty of not having accepted the advances of Cifuentes Ortiga. Nevertheless, why are they looking for her again?
Then, the characters are intertwined: from American Zachary Collum, a gringo veteran, who has to leave his dog Henry in custody to someone before leaving for the United States. The poor black dog passes from hand-to-hand to finish with those of David Garrett (not the famous violinist), manager of the Jaguar Nook Restaurant, which then leaves him to Antonio, who finds himself as animal rights activist almost by accident.
In the story does not go unnoticed the D2 intrigues, the Guatemalan FBI, and the dirty chores of General Cifuentes that eventually die and no one knows who murdered him.
But the final remains a question, why would Rx566SL-REAPER be recovered? And who had driven it and with what purpose? And if it was Alfredo Nottembaum, Carlos Lahsen’s partner, and Luisa’s father-in-law? He had been funding the putsch in 1989… and he’s portrayed in the photograph of the conservative members of the Coffee Club along with Carlos!
A novel to read by keeping the breath, written with sincerity and humor, in which true human values are reported as opposed to violence and crime.
I like Monterroso’s style of naivety, as if it were his inner child to dictate words, knowing how to describe a variety of situations while maintaining a candid, though meticulous, language until the last detail.
Even this novel is suitable as well for a young audience, I also recommend it for educational purposes as it (unfortunately) deals with situations that are always up to date… everywhere on this planet!

Sono trascorsi una decina d’anni e Isabel e Inés sono ormai cresciute: ve le ricordate le giovani protagoniste del romanzo La Mosca Dragon?
Arturo Monterroso ci riporta alla Guatemala di sempre, ricca di colpi di scena politici, di attentati sanguinosi dove i narcotrafficanti, i militari e quelli che fan soldi in malo modo, la san lunga sul come far scorrere terrore.
Questa volta, il protagonista è un qualcosa che ha l’aspetto di un piccolo insetto che assomiglia parecchio alla Mosca Dragón di Maruca e Enriqueta a Tecpán: il suo nome in codice è Rx566SL-REAPER.

Sono mille le possibilità dove anche la più banale situazione potrebbe essere ragione di una sparatoria; ma a seguito delle intimidazioni accadute quella notte, Antonio, papà di Inés e Isabel, decide di portare la moglie Nina e le figlie per qualche tempo da Gertrudis una loro parente.
Una settimana dopo essersi trasferiti da zia Gertrudis, Antonio e famiglia sono invitati a pranzo a San Lucas nella casa dell’ingegnere lquijay, ed è qui che durante una passeggiata nel giardino della villa appare la Rx566SL-REAPER.
Il giovane ingegnere Manuel, amico di Inés e Isabel, sarà un prezioso alleato nel riuscire a scoprire come è fatto e a cosa serve, per mezzo di un è un microscopio elettronico a scansione.

L’ironia pungente dell’autore prende corpo nei colloqui dei personaggi dove viene sdrammatizzata la cruda realtà guatemalteca (e di molti altri paesi) di ogni giorno. Da una parte i pretesti per i festeggiamenti di mille diversi santi, dall’altra il saper ridicolizzare chi deve per forza sostenere la tecnologia straniera possedendo un cellulare.
E il sarcasmo è ben personificato da Don Ramiro, improvvisato investigatore, quando si rivolge a Amadeo il suo giovane aiutante. Don Ramiro è stato incaricato da un sicario di ritrovare Adelaida Prado, mentre sulle tracce di Adelaida si sono messe anche Inés e Isabel…
La giovane antropologa Adelaida, tenuta nascosta da Maruca e Enriqueta a Tecpán nella storia La Mosca Dragon, ritornata dopo anni di asilo politico in Messico, in verità non era una sovversiva, ma era solo colpevole di non aver accettato le avances di Cifuentes Ortiga. Ma perché ora la stanno di nuovo cercando?

Poi i personaggi si intrecciano: dall’americano Zachary Collum, un gringo veterano, che deve lasciare il suo cane Henry in custodia a qualcuno prima di partire per gli Stati Uniti. Il povero cane nero passa di mano in mano per finire in quelle di David Garrett (non il famoso violinista), gestore del Ristorante Jaguar Nook, che lo lascia poi ad un Antonio ritrovatosi animalista quasi per caso.
Nella storia non passano inosservati gli intrighi con la D2, l’FBI guatemalteca, e le sporche faccende del generale Cifuentes che alla fine ci lascia le penne, non si sa bene da chi assassinato.

Ma al finale resta un dubbio, perché Rx566SL-REAPER doveva essere recuperata? E chi l’aveva azionata e con quale scopo? E se fosse stato Alfredo Nottembaum, il socio di Carlos Lahsen e suocero di Luisa? Era stato lui a finanziare il Colpo di Stato nel 1989… e lui è ritratto nella fotografia dei membri conservatori del Coffee Club assieme a Carlos!

Un romanzo da leggere trattenendo il fiato, scritto con sincerità ed umorismo, nel quale sono riportati i veri valori umani in contrapposizione alla violenza e criminalità.
Mi piace lo stile di Monterroso per l’ingenuità, quasi fosse il suo bambino interiore a dettare le parole, nel saper descrivere svariate situazioni mantenendo un linguaggio candido sebbene minuzioso fino all’ultimo dettaglio.
Anche questo romanzo è adatto ad un pubblico giovane e adulto, lo raccomando anche a scopo didattico in quanto tratta di situazioni sempre attualissime… ogni dove su questo pianeta!
